April Sims, President of the Washington State AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, where she discussed her journey in the labor movement, her plan is to put good, union jobs at the forefront of the green energy future and how she plans to improve organizing in the state with the third highest union density.

Many Union leaders began their labor journeys at a young age, and for Sims, it was no different. Her journey began after witnessing the benefits and quality of life her mother’s union job provided her family. This impacted and guided Sims along her journey with the labor movement. She discussed a shop representative who helped push her into leadership with her Union, AFSCME Council 28. After developing her leadership skills with Council 28, Sims began working with the Washington State AFL-CIO and was eventually elected president, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

Sims has been able to work with the affiliated Locals and develop a plan for 2024 and a transition to a green energy future. Sims discussed the four pillars for success in the 2024 development and growth of the Washington AFL-CIO. Among these pillars is building a plan for the future transition of the energy industry to green energy and ensuring good, union jobs will lead this transition. She talked about the importance of Project Labor Agreements and how they have helped pave the way for legislation that requires projects over $1 million to include a PLA.

The AFL-CIO always strives to be at the table and fight for workers' protection and isn’t afraid to create its own table to have those conversations if necessary. Sims talked about Washington state being the third leading state in union density and the power that gives the state Labor Council to have quality labor discussions with state legislators. While there is still a fight to improve the quality of life and grow the labor movement in Washington, Sims is thankful for the advantages of a strong labor movement. Once they know the best path forward for organizing with their affiliates, Sims' goal is to become the second-highest state in union density by the end of 2024.
