Tim Burga, President of the Ohio AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the state labor federation’s 34th Biennial Convention in Cleveland. He also discussed Maureen O’Connor’s work on Citizens Not Politicians and the importance of residents checking their voter registration before Ohio’s Oct. 7 deadline.

Last week, the Ohio AFL-CIO hosted its 34th Biennial Convention in Cleveland. Burga discussed the history of the state labor federation, which began in Cleveland nearly 70 years ago. Burga discussed the notable speakers including Retired Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Cour, Maureen O’Connor, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers International President Kenny Cooper.

During her speech, O’Connor discussed the importance of voting “Yes” on State Issue 1 in November. After retiring from the Ohio Supreme Court, O’Connor helped create the Citizens Not Politicians ballot initiative. The proposed amendment would create a nonpartisan committee made up of Democratic, Republican and Independent Ohio citizens for creating fair voting districts in the state.

Finally, Burga discussed the importance of ensuring Ohio residents are registered to vote prior to going to the polls and how they can check on their registration. Burga said the final day to register to vote is Oct. 7 in Ohio.
