Maria Scheeler, Fund Adminstrator for the Teamsters Health & Welfare and Pension Funds of Philadelphia and Vicinity, and Tyler Lefeber, Director of Labor & Trust Sales at Color Health, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss innovative approaches to cancer prevention and care for union members including early detection, comprehensive support and the evolving landscape of personalized healthcare.

Scheeler began by discussing the impact of implementing at-home cancer screening tests for Teamsters members. In the first year, the fund saw increases in screening compliance across various cancer types, including a 20 percent increase for prostate cancer and 12 percent for cervical cancer. She said the proactive approach not only improved early detection rates but also educated members about their health risks and available benefits. Scheeler emphasized the importance of continuous communication and education to ensure members take advantage of these life-saving resources.

Lefeber continued by outlining the need for a comprehensive approach to cancer care that extends beyond screening. Color Health provides support to members throughout their cancer journey, from education and early detection to active treatment and survivorship care. He said the support includes 24/7 access to oncologists, genetic counselors and other specialists who can provide personalized guidance and support. Lefeber said the approach helps address the complex physical, emotional and financial challenges faced by cancer patients and their caregivers, filling critical gaps in the traditional healthcare system.

Finally, both Scheeler and Lefeber discussed the unique opportunity unions have to lead the way in member-focused healthcare. By implementing innovative programs like Color Health's comprehensive cancer care solution, unions would be able to shift from a culture of reactive treatment to one of proactive prevention. According to Scheeler, this approach not only improves health outcomes but also demonstrates the union's commitment to its members' well-being. As healthcare continues to evolve, personalized, proactive care will become increasingly important in supporting union members and their families throughout their lives, Lefeber said.
