Sean Allen, President of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 21 — a Local within BAC Administrative District Council 1 of Illinois — and a fourth-generation tradesman, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast. He discussed the Union Proud Warrior platform, the impact of social media on union organizing and the challenges of addressing anti-union sentiment.
Allen discussed the creation of the Union Proud Warrior platform in 2018 to unify and energize union members across various trades. The initiative began with community events and has since expanded into a robust online presence, leveraging social media to reach a broader audience. Allen said the platform's success is evident in its growing follower base, which includes thousands of union supporters and curious individuals eager to learn about union benefits. He emphasized the importance of creating a collective identity for union members, describing them as "warriors" who stand up for each other and fight for workers' rights.
The Union Proud Warrior platform has harnessed the power of social media to facilitate union organizing and outreach. Allen noted that the platform's presence on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter has opened new avenues for communication, allowing potential union members to connect discreetly and learn about union opportunities. He said the digital approach has proven effective in reaching younger audiences and those unfamiliar with union benefits, increasing interest and participation in union activities. Allen highlighted the importance of adapting to modern communication methods to stay relevant and effective in today's fast-paced digital landscape.
Despite the platform's success, Allen acknowledged the challenges posed by anti-union sentiment, particularly on social media. He pointed out that unions are often misunderstood and face criticism from those who lack awareness of the benefits they provide. Allen discussed the need for unions to actively counter negative narratives by sharing positive stories and educating the public about the advantages of union membership. By doing so, unions can dispel myths and foster a more supportive environment for workers seeking to improve their working conditions.
