Jim Petrides, senior mechanical insulation specialist for the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a recent study in the Houston area, work opportunities for signatory contractors and emphasized the need for education in the industry.

The LMCT's recent study of two sports stadiums in the Houston area revealed significant issues with mold and energy inefficiency. Petrides explained that the 48-page report outlined ways to improve the facility's mechanical insulation systems, enhance entertainment value and address mold problems. The study's findings will help stakeholders make informed decisions about whether to renovate the existing structure or build a new facility, potentially opening up work opportunities for union mechanical insulators.

Petrides then discussed the importance of educating stakeholders about the benefits of proper mechanical insulation. He noted that while some energy service companies and engineers understand its value, many clients and building owners remain unaware of the significant return on investment. When installed correctly, mechanical insulation can reduce energy costs, control condensation and mold, minimize corrosion on piping and improve indoor air quality. Petrides emphasized that investing in mechanical insulation installation by trained professionals leads to lower facility life cycle costs.

Finally, Petrides discussed how the LMCT actively promotes their trade and expands opportunities for members and signatory contractors. He highlighted the LMCT’s efforts to educate political representatives, building owners and facility managers about the long-term benefits of proper insulation. He noted that the industry is growing rapidly, offering excellent career prospects for young people interested in a field that contributes to energy efficiency and sustainability.
