United Auto Workers (UAW) Legislative Representative Desiree Hoffman joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the future of electric vehicle tax credits now that the Build Back Better budget reconciliation bill has stalled in the U.S. Senate.

Language in the bill provided a $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle, plus an additional credit of $4,500 if the vehicle is domestic and union made.

The bill is not entirely dead and may be revived under a new name, Hoffman said. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who had opposed the legislation, has indicated he supports numerous provisions of the bill, particularly when it comes to segments related to climate change. Hoffman is hopeful the tax credits will be included in a revived bill.

She also talked about the Striking Workers Healthcare Protection Act, introduced by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), that would require employers to continue providing health insurance to workers exercising their right to strike.

Lastly, Hoffman discussed President Biden’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the first African American woman nominated to the high court, Jackson’s nomination is historic and she has a stellar background, Hoffman added.
