Samantha Sanders, Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Trump administration's actions against workers in its first 100 days, highlighting the administration's attacks on collective bargaining rights, diversity initiatives and worker safety regulations.

The Trump administration's aggressive stance against federal employee unions was a key focus with Sanders. She pointed to the attempted termination of collective bargaining agreements for over 45,000 TSA workers as a prime example. This move, along with the firing of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) chair, demonstrates a clear disregard for hard-won union rights and legal protections for federal employees. Sanders emphasized that these actions set a dangerous precedent, potentially affecting workers beyond the federal sector.

Sanders next discussed the administration's attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Contrary to the perception that these are merely symbolic gestures, Sanders argued that the anti-DEI stance has real, harmful consequences. By dismantling programs aimed at addressing historical inequities, such as initiatives to promote women in the trades, the administration is effectively ignoring systemic disparities in employment and wealth. This approach, Sanders warned, ultimately impacts all workers, not just those from marginalized groups.

Finally, Sanders highlighted the “gutting” of worker safety agencies, particularly at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). She described the shock of NIOSH employees arriving at work to find their access cards deactivated, effectively shutting down vital research and health screening programs for workers in dangerous industries. This move, Sanders argued, directly contradicts the administration's claimed commitment to protecting American workers and instead, she believes it has put them at greater risk.
