On this episode of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Michelle Eisen, a barista and spokesperson for Starbucks Workers United, shared her experience working at Starbucks, how she witnessed the company’s transformation over the years and her role in the Buffalo organizing drive that galvanized a nationwide movement.

Reflecting on her start at Starbucks in 2010, Eisen recalled a time when the company was widely regarded as a progressive employer, offering flexible hours and meaningful benefits. Over time, she experienced significant changes as the company shifted priorities. She described how the pandemic became a turning point, with deteriorating conditions and safety concerns prompting employees to take action. When company policies began contradicting legal health mandates, Eisen said her colleagues realized that unionization was necessary to protect their interests and voices in the workplace.

The organizing campaign in Buffalo was marked by fierce resistance from Starbucks management. Eisen vividly outlined the company’s efforts to suppress the union drive, including the influx of out-of-town managers, surveillance, and the implementation of mandatory captive-audience meetings. She credited the resolve and energy of workers for pushing forward, highlighting how the adversity steeled her own commitment to the union effort. Eisen was clear about both the emotional toll and the sense of empowerment and unity that emerged during moments of struggle.

Looking ahead, Eisen remains optimistic yet realistic about the path forward. She spoke about the extensive legal and institutional barriers workers face, referencing the weakened state of American labor law and the aggressive union-busting tactics employed by corporations. Nonetheless, she believes the movement's power lies in worker solidarity and public support. Eisen urged allies to continue standing with striking workers, emphasizing that the fight at Starbucks is emblematic of a broader push for fair treatment, livable wages and respect across the American workforce.
