Sacramento Electrical Training Center Instructor Will McKee and Training Director Chris Tillery joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss their recent $2 million grant, efforts to increase diversity in the electrical trade and their success in apprenticeship competitions.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 340 Training Center recently secured a nearly $2 million Equal Representation in Construction Apprenticeship (ERiCA) Grant, with $1.2 million earmarked for apprentice childcare costs. McKee and Tillery explained that the funding will support 120 students, providing $10,000 each to help with childcare expenses. The grant aims to improve retention, particularly for women and underserved communities entering the trade. McKee emphasized the importance of this support, noting that it helps apprentices balance family responsibilities with the demanding schedule of the program.
Tillery highlighted the center's increased outreach efforts, including participation in 68 community events last year. He added that these efforts have led to a record number of apprentices and more interest from high schools in inviting trade representatives to career days. The center's website and marketing strategies have been modernized to attract more diverse applicants, with 27 women currently enrolled in the program. Tillery said the outreach has been crucial in securing grants and developing relationships with workforce development groups and nonprofits.
Last year, the Sacramento Electrical Training Center took first place in the Western States Electrical Contest, competing against top apprentices from 11 states. This achievement underscores the quality of their training program and the skills of their apprentices. McKee noted that their success stems from sending their best and brightest to these competitions, rather than specifically training individuals for contests. By teaching this way, they allow their apprentices to become multi-talented and better prepared for a career with the IBEW.
