Author, Rosemary Gibson joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the growing supply chain shortage of essential generic medications from China.

Gibson co-authored a book on the control of the Chinese market in the prescription drug industry, China Rx. In her book, Gibson details the events that led to the reliance on the Chinese production of prescription drugs. Included in the book is the impact that free trade with China played in the transfer of production. Gibson also discussed the factors that shutdown American drug production and shifted to Chinese production.

Gibson spoke on the rapid growth of the Chinese prescription drug industry. She shared how the Chinese government put its full support behind the production plans and has since become the leading provider of generic prescription medications. However, it’s not just the drugs that are in short supply, it’s also the critical starting materials in the production of the drugs that China controls. Gibson said a shutdown of the supply chain would cripple the American pharmaceutical industry.

Gibson proposed a plan to help the United States eliminate the supply chain shortages on drugs coming from China. In testimony with Homeland Security, Gibson detailed her plan to use taxpayer money to recreate the production of essential generic drugs in America. She also detailed a plan in place from a group of private hospitals who are currently building a manufacturing plant in Virginia to begin production of these generic drugs and ensure minimal impact to any more supply chain shortages.
