Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss her new book, "Why Fascists Fear Teachers." The book explores the dangers of fascistic behavior in America, the critical role of teachers in preserving democracy and the importance of critical thinking in education.

Weingarten emphasized that her book warns about fascist behavior in America, describing how actions like disappearing people, indicting enemies and erasing history are steps toward authoritarianism. She stressed that teachers are the antidote to fascism because they foster critical thinking and create pluralistic environments. Weingarten argued that fascists fear teachers precisely because educators equip students with the skills to discern fact from fiction and bring people together.

The AFT president highlighted the importance of critical thinking in maintaining democracy. She explained that the ability to analyze information, problem-solve and consider multiple perspectives is crucial for a functioning society. Weingarten contrasted this approach with the tactics of those who seek to concentrate power by limiting rights and fostering division. She emphasized that teachers play a vital role in creating safe, welcoming environments where students can learn to think critically and engage in civil discourse.

Weingarten also addressed the challenges posed by misinformation and artificial intelligence. She expressed concern about the lack of regulation and guardrails against disinformation, particularly in social media and emerging technologies. Weingarten criticized big tech companies for resisting efforts to protect privacy rights and regulate the spread of false information. She argued that these issues, combined with attacks on unions and collective bargaining rights, pose significant threats to people's ability to have a good life and maintain power for themselves.
