Rail safety concerns: BMWED warns of dangerous automation push

Tony Cardwell, President of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWED) – a division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters – joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the potential dangers of proposed autonomous track inspections, the importance of human inspectors and the anticipated consequences of reducing mandated inspections.

Cardwell began by discussing the vital role track inspectors play in preventing derailments. He explained that 51 percent of train derailments are caused by track defects, underscoring the importance of thorough human inspections. The railroad industry's push to replace human inspectors with autonomous vehicles is concerning, Cardwell said, as these machines only catch about 21 percent to 24 percent of defects compared to human inspectors. He stressed that this move could lead to more accidents and environmental disasters, similar to the East Palestine, Ohio incident.

Next, Cardwell addressed the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) possible reduction of mandated track inspections by 75 percent. This proposal, coupled with a 72-hour delay in addressing detected defects, poses significant safety risks, he said. Cardwell urged listeners to contact their representatives and the FRA before the July 9 comment period deadline to oppose these dangerous exemptions. He emphasized that this issue transcends politics and should be a public safety concern for all Americans.

Finally, Cardwell highlighted the BMWED’s efforts to protect worker and public safety. He noted that even some railroad management personnel recognize the dangers of the proposed changes. Cardwell stressed the need for rational decision-making based on data and safety concerns rather than profit-driven motives.
