In today’s episode of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, we welcomed Natalie Robin, organizer for United Scenic Artists Local 829 (USA 829), and Dante Smith, a lighting designer and union member, for a deep dive into the unionization efforts at the Lighting Design Group (LDG).
Representing designers, coordinators and scenic artists working in live performance and motion pictures across the United States, USA 829 is part of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE).
The path to unionization at LDG was a meticulous and grassroots-driven process. According to Robin, initial conversations with workers began over two years ago, focusing on building a strong organizing committee and gradually earning the trust and support of colleagues. The campaign, led internally by committed workers like Smith, prioritized consensus-building, education and preparing for potential anti-union pushback. Once the group achieved a supermajority in signed authorization cards, they sought voluntary recognition from management, which declined, prompting an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board. The union was ultimately certified, marking a significant win for LDG’s designers and draftspeople.
With the union now recognized, the immediate challenge for LDG’s newly organized workers is negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement. Establishing a bargaining committee and gathering members’ priorities is underway, with a prominent focus on ensuring that both full-time and freelance employees, who perform similar work, receive equitable treatment, Robin said. Both Robin and Smith emphasized that the primary motivation is to secure a seat at the table, particularly as the company faces new ownership and management transitions. They said they want clear, consistent communication and stronger protections that accurately reflect the high-caliber work these professionals deliver to major networks and clients.
Smith and Robin highlighted critical issues, including safety, fair compensation and industry pressures as main topics they are focused on in the new contract negotiations. Workplace safety, given the demands of staging live and broadcast events, is a primary focus, with the union collaborating closely with IATSE Local One, who represent technicians at LDG, to address shared concerns. In addition, Smith emphasized the importance of transparency and meaningful participation in company decisions that affect wages and job security, particularly in light of industry changes and financial pressures. Both Robin and Smith expressed cautious optimism, a commitment to patience and a strong sense of solidarity as they embark on negotiations, aiming for progress that is both practical and lasting.
