Norm Wernet, State Director for the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the efforts to prevent the passage of State Issue 1. Wernet also talked about Social Security’s 88th anniversary, what the program has done for retirees and issues facing the program today.

Retirees from the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans got together on Aug. 8 to get the word out to Vote No on State Issue 1. While the retirees had fun during the event, they successfully did the job of spreading the word. It was a great victory for labor and retirees across the state, Wernet said.

It’s the Social Security program’s 88th anniversary. Retirees from across the state recently got together to help remember and celebrate the program. Since its inception, retirees and Social Security have been linked together. This is why so many retirees love to celebrate the Social Security program, Wernet said.

The Social Security program was created to provide financial protection for United States citizens. The funds collected during a worker's career are then used to support Americans throughout life’s journey. Wernet believes legislators need to stay away from using the program as a political tool since all the money comes from the workers that will eventually seek to withdraw.
