Greg Regan, recently re-elected as President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, discussed the organization’s 35th anniversary convention, key policy priorities and the challenges facing transportation infrastructure funding.

The convention featured site visits and tours of worker facilities, allowing union leaders from different transportation sectors to gain insights into each other’s work. These experiences underscored the importance of the TTD’s agenda, which includes addressing cross-border rail issues, air traffic control staffing and mental health for pilots and air traffic controllers, he said. Regan emphasized how the TTD’s agenda benefits not only union members but also the country by promoting economic growth and job creation.

While transportation funding has traditionally enjoyed bipartisan support, Regan acknowledged the ongoing challenges in securing adequate resources. He highlighted the need to build on the Biden infrastructure law and ensure consistent, long-term funding for critical programs. The upcoming surface reauthorization bill, which controls highway, transit and rail programs, will be a key focus for the TTD as they advocate for policies that support workers and improve transportation systems nationwide, Regan added.

He also expressed concern about potential government shutdowns and the impact of political maneuvering on transportation funding. Regan stressed the importance of responsible government funding and the need to be vigilant against attempts to cut essential programs. As the TTD looks ahead to 2030, Regan and his team remain committed to advancing their policy agenda and ensuring that transportation workers’ voices are heard in Washington.
