Merrilee Logue, Executive Director of the National Labor Office at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss statistics related to cancer diagnoses, the importance of preventive care and screenings and a union’s role in supporting members through their cancer journeys.

Logue began the discussion by sharing cancer statistics from 2024. Over 2 million new cancer cases were diagnosed in the U.S., with 42 percent of these diagnoses being classified as potentially avoidable. Despite the availability of preventive care, many individuals neglect screenings due to fear, lack of information or time constraints, Logue said. She discussed the importance of early detection, which can significantly improve survival rates and reduce costs. As individuals understand their risk factors and utilize available resources, they can stay proactive about their health, Logue said.

Logue then discussed the significance of guideline-driven and evidence-based screenings. These screenings are designed to detect cancer or precancerous changes before symptoms appear, allowing for early intervention and better treatment outcomes. However, nearly 40 percent of people avoid screenings, often due to fear or confusion about which tests to undergo. Logue stressed the importance of overcoming these barriers and encouraged individuals to use tools like the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force app to determine necessary screenings based on personal risk factors.

Finally, Logue discussed the role unions play in supporting members through cancer prevention and treatment. Unions can provide educational resources, host wellness events and implement comprehensive cancer care programs. She said unions can help members navigate their cancer journeys through these initiatives, from prevention to treatment and survivorship. Logue highlighted the importance of unions in ensuring members have access to necessary screenings and support systems, ultimately contributing to healthier, stronger unions.
