Frank Mathews, Administrative Director for District 4 of the Communication Workers of America (CWA), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to provide insights on what CWA is doing to prepare for the future and continue to protect workers' rights.

Mathews expressed concern over some of the election results, noting that despite efforts in key states like Michigan and Wisconsin, the anticipated outcomes did not materialize. He highlighted the positive impact of the Biden-Harris administration had on labor rights, contrasting it with the potential challenges posed by a return to policies from the previous Trump administration. Mathews emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly regarding potential changes to the National Labor Relations Board, which could impact workers' rights.

Despite setbacks at the federal level, Mathews pointed to significant victories for labor and progressive issues in certain states. As an example, he cited the success of CWA Local 4319 in Ohio, where the CWA endorsed candidate Erika White won a seat in the state legislature. Another labor victory occurred in Denver, where a city charter amendment paved the way for collective bargaining rights for over 7,000 city workers. These wins demonstrate the power of grassroots organizing and the importance of labor representation in government, he said.

Looking ahead, the CWA plans to conduct a nationwide poll of its members to better understand their feelings on the election results and refine its strategies. Mathews emphasized the importance of learning from both successes and setbacks to strengthen labor's position in future elections. By focusing on member engagement and effective messaging, the CWA aims to continue advocating for workers and advancing progressive policies.
