Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast and addressed the importance of providing mental health services to those in the construction industry.

Ielmini spoke about the Insulator Union’s Member Assistance Program, which is designed to tackle the stigma of mental health in the construction industry. Construction workers are five times more likely to suffer from depression or commit suicide, and this program hopes to provide professional help to those who need it, Ielmini said.

The Insulators Union will provide mental health awareness and education to all of their affiliated members and affiliated contractors to help recognize the signs someone may need help. Ielmini said the first step to help is to discuss a person’s mental health. He feels it is crucial for the success of the program to fully educate all Insulator Local Union leaders on this topic. Once these steps are in place, along with a confidential outreach program, Ielmini hopes the Insulator’s MAP will lower the growing suicide rates in the construction industry.

He then gave an update on the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act, which must be reintroduced to Congress. Before the legislation is reintroduced, Ielmini wants to get a Republican co-sponsor for the bill. He believes greater bi-partisan support will create a better opportunity to get the legislation passed.
