Melissa Cropper, President of the Ohio Federation of Teachers, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss organizing efforts among library workers, recent child labor legislation in Ohio and the union’s endorsement of a gubernatorial candidate.

Cropper’s conversation began with a discussion of the successful push by Columbus Metropolitan Library workers to file for a union election. She noted the significance, as more than 600 library staff have signaled their interest in organizing with the Ohio Federation of Teachers. Motivated by escalating legislative threats—including felony charges for lending certain library materials—and rising concerns about workplace safety, library employees are seeking the protection and solidarity that comes with union representation. Cropper emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader trend, as library professionals unite to safeguard their rights and working conditions amid political and social pressures.

Shifting to state politics, Cropper addressed Ohio’s recent debate over child labor laws. She expressed strong opposition to legislative attempts to allow minors to work later hours, particularly when such changes contradict federal labor standards. While the bill passed the legislature, Gov. Mike DeWine opted to veto it—a move Melissa Cropper praised as consistent with his child-focused policies. She argued that lawmakers should address workforce challenges by improving working conditions and wages for adults, rather than relying on teenagers to fill job gaps. Concerns remain that similar legislative efforts could resurface, but for now, Cropper said the OFT is applauding the protection of young workers.

Finally, Cropper detailed the Ohio Federation of Teachers’ decision to endorse Dr. Amy Acton’s gubernatorial campaign. She described Acton’s steady leadership during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and her unwavering support for public schools and libraries as key reasons for this early endorsement. Acton’s family roots in education, as well as stark contrasts with her political opponent’s stance on teacher unions and school privatization, made her the preferred choice for the OFT. Cropper expressed optimism about Acton’s potential to advocate for public education and social services if elected governor.
