Jerry Womick, Business Manager for LIUNA Local 773 and a Midwest Region Special International Representative, discussed the union's growth strategies, infrastructure projects in Illinois and community outreach efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

LIUNA Local 773 is actively working to meet the "March to a Million" membership goal set by General President Brent Booker. The Local focuses on expanding into new industries and maintaining its high market share in construction. In the Midwest region, there's a strong emphasis on organizing in Texas, where significant work opportunities exist. Womick highlighted the Local's innovative high school program, partnering with seven area schools to offer apprenticeship classes and college credits, addressing the aging workforce challenge.

Despite uncertainties surrounding federal infrastructure projects, Illinois remains busy with the $45 to $50 billion Rebuild Illinois 2.0 initiative. This state-level investment is keeping LIUNA members employed and creating a constant demand for new apprentices and experienced workers. Womick emphasized the stark contrast in job opportunities and apprenticeship intake under the current labor-friendly administration compared to the previous one.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, LIUNA Local 773 demonstrated its commitment to community service by distributing over two million pounds of fresh produce, dairy and meat throughout Southern Illinois. This effort not only helped those in need but also served as an effective organizing tool, improving the union's image and opening doors previously closed to them. Womick stressed the importance of unions sharing their community involvement stories to showcase their value beyond the workplace.
