Terrance Hall, a janitor and member of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss recent contract negotiations, the low wages in the janitorial industry and some of the challenges in bargaining a fair contract.

Hall, serving on the bargaining committee for the first time, detailed the frustrating negotiations. Building owners offered minimal wage increases that failed to keep pace with inflation. With starting wages as low as $13 per hour in some companies, many janitors struggle to make ends meet and often require multiple jobs or public assistance. Hall said the bargaining process also addressed benefits, holidays and personal days, and has resulted in a tentative agreement, which he also discussed.

Hall then highlighted the high turnover rate in the janitorial industry, most of which he attributed to low wages. Hall noted that many workers leave for higher-paying positions in other sectors, such as fast food, where wages often surpass those in janitorial work. This turnover creates additional challenges for the union and workers alike, as it weakens their bargaining position and disrupts workplace stability.

Finally, Hall shared his experience as a first-time bargaining committee member, describing the support provided by SEIU Local 1 during the process. Despite the guidance, he expressed nervousness about the upcoming vote on the tentative agreement, anticipating disappointment from fellow workers. Hall said the new experience has shown him the complex dynamics of union negotiations and the difficult decisions faced by labor representatives.
