Wayne Creasap, Director of Safety and Health for the Iron Workers Union, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and reflected on the progress the union made in health and safety, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement and innovation in protective gear.

Creasap began by discussing the challenges faced by the Ironworking community, noting that despite advancements, the industry still experienced tragic losses in 2024. Four Ironworkers lost their lives on the job due to falls and struck-by incidents. These incidents serve as a somber reminder of the need to focus on safety training and awareness. Creasap stressed the importance of accountability and situational awareness among workers to help prevent such tragedies.

Enhancing safety involves collaboration and dialogue, Creasap said, which is why the Iron Workers and IMPACT host biannual safety and health roundtables. These gatherings bring together industry stakeholders, including government representatives, safety professionals and product manufacturers, to share ideas and develop solutions tailored to the needs of Ironworkers. By fostering open communication, these roundtables aim to drive innovation and create safer working environments.

One area of recent focus has been the evolution of head protection. Creasap explained the transition from traditional hard hats to advanced helmets that offer increased protection from multiple angles. While these changes have been met with some resistance, they represent a crucial step forward in reducing traumatic brain injuries. By working with manufacturers to adapt these helmets for Ironworker-specific needs, the industry is investing in safety and, ultimately, the well-being of its workers.
