Dr. Zaid Alrashid, internal medicine resident at Brookdale University and delegate of the Committee of Interns and Residents/-Service Employees International Union (CIR-SEIU), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the critical role of immigrant doctors in the U.S. healthcare system. Alrashid highlighted the growing physician shortage, the impact of visa restrictions on healthcare delivery and the importance of union representation for resident physicians.
The U.S. faces a looming physician shortage, with projections indicating a deficit of 86,000 doctors by 2036. Alrashid emphasized that immigrant doctors, who comprise 25 percent of practicing physicians and 27 percent of residents and fellows, are crucial to addressing this shortage. He explained that the extensive training required to become a doctor — up to 14 years, including specialization — makes it challenging to fill gaps quickly in the healthcare workforce, underscoring the importance of retaining and supporting immigrant physicians.
Recent visa restrictions and proposed legislation pose significant threats to the stability of the healthcare system, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Alrashid noted that many immigrant doctors work in these communities, providing essential primary care and hospital services. He stressed that without these physicians, many hospitals and clinics would struggle to maintain adequate staffing levels, potentially leading to reduced access to healthcare for millions of Americans.
Union representation is vital in supporting resident physicians, including those with immigrant backgrounds. Alrashid discussed how CIR-SEIU advocates for better working conditions, fair compensation and job security for residents. He emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing challenges faced by healthcare workers, including the unique concerns of immigrant doctors who may fear visa-related retaliation. Alrashid said the union provides a platform for residents to voice their concerns and work towards improving the healthcare system for providers and patients.
