Sherman's journey began with a chance conversation with a Ukrainian World War II veteran. It sparked a desire to honor American soldiers who never returned home. This led to a decade-long project visiting 23 American overseas military cemeteries from World War I and World War II. Sherman's work goes beyond mere documentation, using various photographic techniques to capture the geometry and emotion of these sacred spaces. His book, containing over 225 photographs and 54 biographies, puts faces to the names etched in stone, creating a powerful visual memorial. The project has transformed Sherman's perspective on military service and sacrifice. By connecting with families of the fallen and hearing their stories, he has developed a deeper understanding of the human cost of war. Sherman said this project has given him a renewed sense of purpose, with a clear mission to share these stories and ensure that the sacrifices of these service members are not forgotten. His work serves as a bridge between generations, keeping the memory of the fallen alive and relevant. Sherman's journey highlights the importance of remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Sherman explained that by capturing the beauty and solemnity of these overseas cemeteries, he can bring attention to the often-overlooked final resting places of American heroes. Sherman said his work should serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing impact of war and the enduring gratitude owed to those who never returned home. Through his lens, he invites viewers to reflect on the actual cost of freedom and the importance of preserving these memories for future generations.
