Doug Moore, Executive Director of the United Domestic Workers (UDW), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the challenges facing domestic workers, the importance of Proposition 50 in California and UDW's organizing strategies. Moore, who leads AFSCME's largest Local Union in California, shared insights on the union's growth, legislative efforts and the impact of federal budget cuts on vulnerable communities.
Moore highlighted UDW's remarkable growth despite anti-union legislation, increasing from 60,000 members in 2013 to over 112,000 voluntary dues-paying members today. He attributed this success to innovative organizing strategies, including large-scale membership meetings, community engagement and a focus on social justice issues beyond traditional labor concerns. Moore emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for home care providers to connect, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose within the union.
The conversation turned to the critical issue of Proposition 50, a redistricting measure in California. Moore explained that UDW's support for Prop 50 stems from their opposition to HR1, a federal bill that would significantly cut Medicaid funding. He emphasized that these cuts would directly affect UDW members and their clients, potentially reducing the number of care hours available to vulnerable individuals. Moore framed Prop 50 as a tool for accountability, allowing voters to elect leaders who prioritize working families and resist harmful budget cuts.
Moore also addressed the challenges faced by domestic workers, including low pay, lack of benefits and inadequate legal protections. He discussed UDW's efforts to change regulations and improve working conditions, highlighting the union's role in passing term limits for the San Diego Board of Supervisors as a strategy to shift local politics in favor of workers. Moore stressed the need for grassroots organizing and community involvement to effect meaningful change, stating that relying solely on politicians is not enough to address the complex issues facing domestic workers and their clients.
