David Spero, President of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss recent system failures at Newark Liberty International Airport, the need for updated infrastructure and the challenges caused by insufficient funding.

Spero began by discussing the alarming frequency of Newark Liberty International Airport system failures, where communication lines between air traffic control centers have repeatedly faltered. He said the outages are similar to buffering during a Netflix stream, which disrupts operations and poses significant safety risks. Spero said the failures stem from outdated third-party communication systems, not systems maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), that struggle to keep up with modern demands. Spero emphasized the urgency of resolving these technical issues to prevent potential tragedies and ensure air travel safety.

Next, Spero discussed the broader need for infrastructure upgrades across the aviation industry. Spero pointed out that while there is a substantial surplus in the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, Congress has not allocated sufficient funds to the FAA for necessary updates. This lack of funding has left many systems outdated with some requiring parts sourced from eBay. Spero stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to modernizing the systems, not just focusing on high-profile components like radars and communication tools.

Finally, Spero addressed staffing challenges within the FAA, noting the need for additional technicians to support the modernization efforts. Despite plans to hire more air traffic controllers, there is no dedicated funding for hiring the technicians essential for maintaining and upgrading equipment. The potential reduction in workforce due to budget constraints adds to the stress on current employees, many of whom have opted for early retirement. Spero called for a balanced approach to staffing that ensures both safety and efficiency in the aviation industry.
