Mathews detailed the CWA's recent accountability pickets and rallies, which targeted GOP lawmakers who supported the "big ugly bill." He argues the legislation disproportionately benefits billionaires at the expense of working families, and as a result, the union organized protests at district offices, adopting a "Where's Waldo" theme to highlight the absence of lawmakers willing to face their constituents. Mathews emphasized the bill's negative impacts, including potential healthcare coverage losses for millions and cuts to nutrition assistance programs, while providing substantial tax cuts to the wealthy.
Moving onto the topic of broadband deployment, Mathews shared positive developments from Wisconsin, where 75 percent of a $690 million grant was allocated to fiber optic infrastructure. He praised this approach as future-proof and of higher quality than satellite alternatives. However, Mathews expressed concern that some states might prioritize satellite broadband options, potentially at the behest of the current administration. He stressed the importance of fiber optic technology for long-term connectivity and urged other states to follow Wisconsin's lead in prioritizing quality infrastructure.
Mathews also discussed the changing political landscape, noting a consolidation of various groups stepping forward to advocate for working families. He emphasized the power of multiple voices speaking up for working families, beyond just the Democratic Party, and expressed optimism about the growing movement to challenge policies that favor billionaires over workers.
