Michigan’s State Senator Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) discussed the bill he introduced that repealed Michigan’s So-Called “Right-to-Work” legislation on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
As the first Maltese-American lawmaker and youngest Latino lawmaker in Michigan, Camilleri is used to making history in Michigan. Fighting for what he believes in isn’t something new. He discussed the fight he faced daily, with constant calls and flyers being sent to his office claiming he was taking workers' rights away. Despite all the money spent to deter the passing of his bill, Camilleri and 99 other members of the Michigan Senate voted to approve the repeal of the So-Called “Right-to-Work” legislation.
Not only did the bill repeal So-Called “Right-to-Work” in Michigan, it also will serve to reinstate Prevailing Wage. Becoming the first state in 58 years to repeal So-Called “Right-to-Work,” Camilleri believes that Michigan is now positioned better than ever to be able to support workers' rights. He also shared that other state lawmakers facing similar fights have reached out for assistance navigating how to repeal the So-Called “Right-to-Work.”
Camilleri isn’t done with the fight to continue supporting workers in Michigan. He said there is more legislation to be introduced to renew rights that were taken from workers when the So-Called “Right-to-Work” legislation was initially passed. Camilleri added that for Michigan Democrats to fight any possibility of action from the other side, they would need to carry their momentum into the 2024 election.
