The Best of 2024 series continued with the July 11 interview with Alex Roberts, the Washington, D.C. government affairs representative and contract action ambassador for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), who joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to share insights into the then ongoing contract negotiations with American Airlines.

Roberts grew up in the airline industry, with his mother working as a flight attendant for over 20 years. This upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of community and solidarity among airline workers. Now, as a key figure in the APFA, Roberts advocates for fair contracts and better working conditions for flight attendants. His role involves not only negotiating but also rallying support and communicating with members across the country.

Roberts highlighted the prolonged struggle for a new contract, noting that negotiations have been ongoing since 2019. Flight attendants are currently working under wages set in 2014, which have not kept pace with inflation and rising living costs. This has led to significant financial strain, with some attendants unable to afford basic necessities. Roberts shared an example of a first-year flight attendant who relied on leftover first-class meals due to financial constraints.

The primary challenge facing the APFA is overcoming the constraints of the Railway Labor Act, which governs airline labor relations and complicates the path to striking. Despite these hurdles, Roberts emphasized the union's commitment to securing an industry-leading contract. He urged members to remain steadfast and highlighted the importance of public support and legislative advocacy.

NOTE: Since the July 11 appearance by Roberts, the APFA and American Airlines have reached a new agreement that was ratified on Sept. 12. Learn more about that contract from our Sept. 16 interview with Roberts, here.
