While National Apprenticeship Week is over, it’s never a bad time for the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to highlight the accomplishments of apprentices preparing for a career in the trades. Today we spotlight two remarkable apprentices from the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Coy Seeger from Local 1 Washington/Alaska and Jesus Angulo from Local 3- California.

Seeger, a third-generation brickmason, has masonry in his DNA. After initially working in residential masonry, Seeger transitioned to a career with the BAC, where he embraced the opportunity to work on large-scale projects like high-rises and hospitals. Earlier in 2024, Seeger competed in the Western States Apprentice Contest in Seattle, where his dedication and precision earned him top honors in the brick competition. Reflecting on his journey, Seeger expressed excitement about nearing the completion of his apprenticeship and the prospect of advancing in his career.

Meanwhile, Angulo, an apprentice tile setter with Local 3, credits his family’s legacy in tile setting for his entry into the trade. Despite initial doubts about his abilities, Angulo embraced the challenges of the apprenticeship program, honing his skills in math and geometry. His hard work paid off when he won the Tile division of the Western States Apprentice Contest earlier this year. He said his win serves as proof of his dedication and the excellent training provided by his instructors.

Both Seeger and Angulo exemplify the benefits of joining a union apprenticeship program, where individuals receive hands-on training, competitive wages and the support of a strong community. Their stories showcase the opportunities available in the trades and the lifelong skills that can be gained through union membership.
