World War I sculpture set to be unveiled on National Mall in September

Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for the American Legion, joined the Amercia’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the August edition of the American Legion Magazine.

The featured story in the August edition of the American Legion Magazineis is about the centerpiece of the World War I Memorial that will be unveiled on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He noted it will have taken four years from the initial approval of the sculpture, “A Soldier’s Journey,” through its unveiling in September. Stoffer outlined the history behind the bronze memorial. He explained the work sculptor Sabin Howard had to do to create the piece, which is a story told through images of a soldier from the start of the war to his return home. 

He then discussed another article, which looks at the Legion’s work to improve the situation at the U.S. southern border. Stoffer spoke about the issues that were fixed nearly 20 years ago when he covered a similar story in the same region and how similar problems have returned to the area. The story looks at the human rights violations that occur when a person attempts to cross the border. He talked about the Legion’s search for a solution to help the human suffering at the border.

Finally, Stoffer spoke about the American Legion’s Boys Nation and the National Junior Shooting Sports Competition that will take place over the next few weeks. The shooting competition will be held at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. It has produced two previous U.S. Olympic athletes. He also explained that nearly 100 young men will attend the Boys Nation program. Stoffer discussed the mock government program and how it fosters a bipartisan approach to legislation.
