America's Work Force Union Podcast

Working with the current government to improve workers' livelihood

Written by awfblog | February 3, 2023

Fred Redmond, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, made his monthly appearance on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and spoke about the 2023 AFL-CIO Martin Luther King Jr. Conference, meeting with the members of the Democratic National Committee and the AFL-CIO’s plan to work with the current government to advance the federation’s pro-workers agenda.

Redmond recapped the 2023 AFL-CIO MLK Jr. Conference, which was held in-person this year. He talked about some of the topics discussed in forums, notable conference speakers and the volunteer work conference attendees performed around Washington, D.C.

He then talked about the current meetings talking place in Philadelphia between the DNC and the AFL-CIO. Redmond described the meetings as profoundly involved and should ensure that both groups are on the same page regarding their efforts to advance organzied labor and its affiliated members. Thanks to these meetings the labor communities have continued to prosper over the years, he added.

Redmond also explained how the AFL-CIO is working with the legislative branch and what it means for union members. He said that in order to continue to protect workers from employer oversteps, the AFL-CIO must first work with members of Congress to change labor laws. By working closely with elected officials, the AFL-CIO can remind them a Collective Bargaining Agreement is the quickest way to put workers on the pathway to a middle class life, he said.
