Women’s History Month: Mandy Jo Ganieany, Painters DC 30

Mandy Jo Ganieany, Director of Organizing for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 30, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss her role in advancing women in construction, tackling labor shortages and the importance of union organizing. 

Ganieany discussed the ambitious campaign to boost IUPAT membership by 20 percent by 2029. She said this initiative is structured like any other campaign, with dedicated organizers and specific tasks to achieve this goal. The campaign garnered unanimous support from delegates at the International's General Convention, highlighting a collective commitment to expanding union membership. With a solid plan and collaboration with partners, this target is within reach, despite the challenges posed by the current labor market, Ganieany said.

Addressing women's challenges in the construction industry, Ganieany highlighted the persistent issues of childcare and maternity leave. She noted that these barriers affect not only women but also single fathers in the trades. Ganieany said the stigma surrounding women in the workforce, particularly regarding childcare responsibilities, needs to be dismantled. She stressed that the lack of non-traditional childcare options and the prevalence of childcare deserts hinder women's participation in the trades.

Finally, Ganieany discussed the power of organizing in the face of political and social challenges. She described the current climate as a prime opportunity for organizing, with workers from various sectors expressing interest in unionizing. Ganieany said unions provide a collective power crucial for protecting workers' rights and improving working conditions. She encouraged individuals who feel undervalued or lack dignity in their jobs to contact unions for support and guidance.
