Raymond Boyd, United Association (UA) International Training Fund Assistant Director of Education and Training, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and explained how the UA’s apprenticeship programs are using more virtual technology.

Boyd appeared as part of National Apprenticeship Week, held Nov. 14 to 20.

UA JATCs regularly use digital simulated welding experiences to teach the trade through hands-on instruction, Boyd said. Students do not need to be in an actual welding booth wearing personal protective equipment, but can still experience a realistic demonstration. The younger generation is especially attracted to the virtual training technology and tends to excel at it, he added.

Boyd also talked about the UA’s Train the Trainer program and recruitment strategies, including the use of apprentices as ambassadors to visit high schools and middle schools in order to teach students about the UA’s apprenticeship program.
