Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), joined the America's Workforce Union Podcast to discuss the need for improved rail safety measures, the potential impact of deregulation under Project 2025 and the importance of congressional action to protect federal workers.

Rail safety remains a critical concern, especially after recent notable transportation incidents around the U.S. Regan said that despite bipartisan support for safety improvements, there is a lack of legislative action. He pointed out that the freight rail industry's lobbying efforts have hindered progress, leaving communities and the economy vulnerable. Regan stressed the need for regulatory measures to ensure safety standards are met; relying solely on industry goodwill is insufficient.

Project 2025 continues to pose challenges for the transportation industry with its focus on deregulation. Regan explained that some policies in the conservative playbook aim to dismantle essential safety regulations, including those related to crew size and equipment inspections. This approach, he argued, prioritizes profit over safety and could lead to increased risks in the rail industry. Regan called for a balanced approach that leverages technology to enhance safety rather than replace human oversight.

The federal workforce faces uncertainty amid political attacks and proposed cuts. Regan urged Congress to assert its constitutional authority to protect federal programs and employees. He highlighted the broader economic implications of dismantling agencies and cutting funding, which could disrupt essential services and industries. Regan called for a thoughtful evaluation of policy goals to ensure they align with public interest and economic stability.

Listen to the episode above for more from Regan on these topics and more that could impact the transportation industry.
