Greg Regan, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, recently joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss pressing issues in the transportation sector, including avoiding a government shutdown, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization, bolstering U.S. maritime capabilities and advancing the nation's transportation infrastructure.

Regan highlighted the detrimental impact a government shutdown could have, emphasizing the economic toll and disruption to essential services. He said that shutdowns are the worst self-inflicted wound that Congress can do, mainly to the American people. He was thankful that the current federal spending levels have been extended through March. Regan added that stable government operations are crucial in ensuring transportation safety and efficiency.

Thankfully, Regan said, the FAA reauthorization was passed before any potential political uncertainties. The reauthorization ensures continued investment in aviation safety and infrastructure. Because of the early reauthorization, the TTD has been able to focus on implementing the new regulations rather than legislative hurdles, meaning more time spent maintaining and improving the U.S. aviation system's safety standards.

One significant challenge addressed by Regan is railroad workers' benefits. The Rail Employment Equity and Fairness Act (REEF Act), which awaits President Biden’s signature, would restore full benefits to rail workers, something Regan and several union partners championed. The legislation marked a victory for workers unfairly impacted by past budget cuts. Regan also discussed the Ships for America Act, which would enhance U.S. maritime capabilities while reducing reliance on foreign shipping and strengthening domestic industries and workforce.
