Rob Handy, a special education teacher at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Ill., joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a special education program utilizing the North Americas Building Trades Unions’ MC3 program. Handy also shared his journey from aspiring professional baseball player to a special education educator demonstrating the power of vocational training for students with disabilities.
Handy's path to education was unconventional. Initially, he pursued a career in baseball, before being drawn to teaching after successfully connecting with a relative who had behavioral disorders. This experience led him to earn a degree in special education from Eastern Illinois University. Over the past 24 years, Handy has dedicated himself to working with students with disabilities, particularly those with behavioral challenges.
Finding a way for his students to live a fulfilling life was a major reason behind Handy’s implementation of the MC3 program at Lanphier High School. Together with the instructional course from NABTU, Handy provides students with disabilities the opportunity to learn valuable trade skills, opening doors to lucrative careers in the construction industry. Since the inaugural class of 13 students in 2020, the program has grown to 69 currently, with plans to expand to all high school grade levels and offer dual credit opportunities.
Implementing the MC3 program was not without its hurdles. Handy said he faced skepticism from administrators concerned about safety and the feasibility of teaching trade skills to students with disabilities. Handy emphasized proper management techniques and strict safety protocols. He also worked closely with local trade unions and construction companies to ensure the program's curriculum aligned with industry needs. Handy said the program is changing student's lives by providing alternatives to college and allowing students with disabilities to enter the workforce on a level playing field. He said the support he’s received from the local trade unions has been instrumental in their ability to create these new pathways for students.
