988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Mike Hazard, Training Specialist with the United Association Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program, joined America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss mental health and suicide prevention in the United Association. He also discussed the lasting impact of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Finally, Hazard provided an update on the UA VIP program.

The VIP program is a Department of Defense SkillBridge program that prepares transitioning military service members to successful civilian careers in the pipe trades. The 118-day free program provides active-duty military members a guaranteed spot in the UA’s apprenticeship program.

As our coverage of Construction Suicide Prevention Week continues, Hazard discussed how the United Association and VIP are working together to help members in crisis. He talked about their partnership with Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas and the specific programs available to UA VIP participants. Hazard then discussed the impact this program has had on the other segments of the UA. With the support of General President Mark McManus, Hazard and the UA are working together to find solutions for union members.

As a Navy veteran, Hazard reflected on the impact left following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. He talked about the increase in active service members following the attacks. Now many of these military members are looking to transition to a civilian career. To assist his military Brothers and Sisters Hazard ensures the UA VIP program is there to help them successfully transition to a career in the union pipe trades.

If you or someone you know is going through crisis or suffering from suicidal thoughts, please call or text 988 for help now.

Please listen to the show above to hear more from Hazard and the UA VIP.
