Norm Wernet, Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans State Director, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a plan by U.S. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to sunset Social Security and Medicare within five years.
Sunsetting is a legal provision under which a program is automatically terminated at the end of a fixed period, unless renewed by legislative action. Scott’s so-called 11-point Rescue America Plan would sunset both federal programs after five years, Wernet said. He pointed out the plan has received rare pushback from Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who does not see it as politically viable during an election year.
Wernet also spoke about President Biden’s proposal to fund long-term nursing care with Medicare and Medicaid dollars. The plan would fund skilled nursing based facilities, as well as home- and community-based care, in order to provide reasonable wages to address the shortage of nursing care workers. It would also provide enforceable rules to ensure quality control measures.
