Director of the Solid Waste and Recycling Division for the Teamsters, Chuck Stiles, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about the record-setting contract workers at Waste Management in Chicago just approved. Stiles also talked about the work done by the Division and what this contract means for other disposal workers in the Chicagoland area.

Stiles has been a member of the Teamsters for the last 38 years. The pride he feels for helping move members into the middle class is the driving force behind his daily work. As Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division., Stiles leads “tens of thousands” of Teamsters across the country, he said.

In recent years, there has been a “stagnation” in negotiations with employers like Waste Management around the Chicagoland area. These stagnations have led to many parts of the previous contract with Waste Management lacking proper provisions and protections for members. The new contract has been deemed the richest contract this unit has ever earned from their employer, with wage increases and PTO increases that ensure workers are provided for the hazardous work they do. Stiles said.

The waste management job rotates between the fifth and sixth most dangerous job in the world. Several safety factors impact the day-to-day work, and several tasks can result in significant injury. The new contract provides the protections for workers to help them in the case of injury. This contract will now serve as the pattern contract for other waste disposal companies in the Chicagoland area.
