Dan Gallagher, business agent for the United Association’s Pipefitters Local 120 in Cleveland, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to share his career journey and insights into the pipefitting industry, as well as discuss some of the career opportunities available through his Local Union.

Gallagher's career in pipefitting began in 1996, following a brief stint in college. Encouraged by a family member in the trade, Gallagher took the leap, applied and was accepted into Local 120’s apprenticeship program. After topping out, he has gone on to hold various positions within the union, culminating in his current role as a business agent. His experience has provided him with the tools he needed to change his life and now he wants to share that with a new generation of pipefitters through his work with recruitment and the apprenticeship program.

There are unique advantages to pursuing a career in pipefitting, Gallagher said. Most important is the absence of student debt. Throughout the apprenticeship program, the education is practically free, allowing members to receive a quality education along with on-the-job training. Gallagher said this approach not only provides financial relief but also equips apprentices with valuable skills that are in high demand.

The scope of work covered by Local 120 is vast, ranging from HVAC service to fire protection. Gallagher likens the systems they install and maintain to the human body's organs. The systems are usually a critical component of the building’s infrastructure. With a jurisdiction that includes work on notable locations around Cleveland like the Cleveland Clinic campus and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the opportunities for growth and employment are substantial, he said. For those considering a career in the trades, Gallagher’s message was clear: the path is rewarding, both professionally and personally.
