Scott Paul, Alliance for American Manufacturing President, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the Biden administration launching an investigation into China's unfair trade practices in the shipbuilding sector and how Chinese overcapacity is a threat to many U.S. industries.

Paul said the Biden administration was right to move ahead with an investigation into China’s practices in the shipbuilding industry. Paul also said a recent survey conducted on behalf of the AAM found that roughly 76 percent of U.S. adults think the use of Chinese-built drydocks to repair, maintain and retrofit U.S. Navy vessels is a threat to U.S. national security. Additionally, he was also encouraged to hear the President is looking to triple tariff rates on Chinese steel and aluminum imports, which could help loosen China’s grip on the shipbuilding industry.

The U.S., Paul believes, is finally beginning to wake up and understand the danger of Chinese overcapacity, which also threatens U.S. automakers, the solar industry and other critical U.S. industries. Paul also stressed that action needs to be taken to protect the U.S. solar industry, which was nearly wiped out by Chinese overcapacity a decade ago. He warned that China is aiming to spend enough money to outprice its rivals and put them out of business, allowing China to dominate industries and create a global monopoly.
