Tim Burga, president of the Ohio AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the current political climate in Ohio and the implications for workers' rights. As the state prepares for a new legislative session, Burga emphasized the importance of vigilance in protecting the interests of Ohio's workforce.

Reflecting on the recent election, Burga highlighted the defeat of the "Citizens Not Politicians" initiative, which aimed to reform the way legislative maps are drawn in Ohio. Despite widespread support, Burga said, the initiative faced challenges due to confusing ballot language. Burga expressed hope that bipartisan efforts could lead to meaningful reform, noting that Gov. Mike DeWine has shown interest in addressing the issue. As Ohio prepares for a new General Assembly, Burga emphasized the need for continued advocacy to ensure fair representation.

Looking ahead to the upcoming state legislative session, Burga outlined the Ohio AFL-CIO's priorities, including safeguarding workers' rights and opposing harmful legislation. While the lame-duck session poses potential risks, Burga remains optimistic that organized labor can effectively counter any negative proposals. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong relationships with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to advance policies that benefit Ohio's working families.

Burga also addressed the possibility of renewed attacks on collective bargaining rights, drawing parallels to past efforts like 2011’s Senate Bill 5. He reiterated the Ohio AFL-CIO's commitment to defending workers' rights and leveraging public support to counter any extremist measures. By staying vigilant and proactive, the organization aims to protect the hard-won gains of Ohio's labor movement.
