Matt Rothschild, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the win by Wisconsin Democrats in the state Supreme Court election.

On April 4, Wisconsin voters elected its seventh and newest Supreme Court justice. With a split number of conservatives and liberals on the state’s high court, this vote was significant. At the end of the day, Liberal Judge Janet Protasiewicz won what is now the most expensive Supreme Court election in the history of Wisconsin, Rothschild said.

After 13 years under a conservative-run legislature, Rothschild shared his excitement to see the new liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court. He also described the attacks on labor that occurred over the last 13 years. This included illegally redrawn district maps that gave a huge voting advantage to state Republicans. Rothschild hopes the new Supreme Court of Wisconsin can make changes similar to the changes in Michigan in 2018.

With the liberally controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court, Rothschild believes there will be a redrawing of the district maps. He also shared the hope Wisconsin will one day follow in Michigan’s footsteps and repeal the state’s So-Called “Right-to-Work” laws. To do this, the first step must be replacing some of the state's Republican lawmakers, Rothschild said.
