Bill Samuel, AFL-CIO Government Affairs Director, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and gave his thoughts on the nomination of Julie Su to be U.S. Department of Labor Secretary, plus the work to repeal Michigan’s So-Called “Right to Work” laws.
Samuel believes President Joe Biden made a great choice by nominating Su as the next Labor Secretary and hopes her nomination hearings will begin in April. While he thinks Su will ultimately be appointed, he feels the process could be difficult as Democrats only have a single vote advantage. If any Democrats have concerns about her nomination, it will slow down the process.
Discussion then turned to the work of Michigan State Democrats as they attempt repeal the state’s So-Called “Right to Work” legislation. On March 21, members of the House passed the Senate’s revised version of the repeal act. Now, Samuel said, the legislation goes to the desk of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to sign. He hopes she signs the legislation soon and makes history, as Michigan will become the first state to enact and then repeal So-Called “Right to Work” legislation.
Samuel also gave his thoughts on the leadership of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He believes McCarthy and other House Republicans have accomplished nothing, as they have not passed what he considers to be any major legislation. On the other hand, he credits Biden for going at Republians with a progressive agenda instead of giving in to some of their conservative demands like former Democratic Preidents Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama did when they lost the House.
