Frank Mathews, Administrative Director for the Communications Workers of America Union District 4, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the 11th annual Summer Manufacturing Camps, hosted by the office of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

The manufacturing camps provide young Ohioans and their parents with an opportunity to gain an up-to-date, real-world understanding of the American manufacturing sector and the jobs available in this industry. Mathews said the CWA supports this initiative and believes these camps help educate students and their families on the excellent career options available to them in the manufacturing sector.

Mathews then shared his appreciation for outgoing U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, who reportedly accepted an offer from the National Hockey League Players Association to replace Executive Director Donald Fehr. According to reports, Fehr will step down prior to a vote by the NHLPA Executive Board in the coming weeks, as the vote for Walsh is expected to be unanimous. Mathews told several stories about Walsh, including one where Walsh, as DOL Secretary, stood on a picket line to support union workers. He hopes the next Labor Secretary will continue the positive organized labor trend started by Walsh.

Besides Walsh, Mathews also spoke about President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. He explained how the President laid out a plan and vision to continue to push his worker agenda.
