Brecher highlighted the importance of balancing climate protection with the preservation of good jobs for workers. Brecher traced his commitment to labor and environmental issues back to his upbringing in a union household. He emphasized the necessity to ensure workers in industries affected by climate policies are not left behind. This concept has gained traction within the labor movement, with many leaders now advocating for policies that support both environmental sustainability and economic security for workers. Brecher's organization, the Labor Network for Sustainability, plays a crucial role in educating and mobilizing labor unions on climate issues. He shared examples of successful local and state initiatives, such as Illinois' comprehensive legislation that includes a bill of rights for displaced workers. These efforts demonstrate how communities can transition to renewable energy while protecting workers' livelihoods and promoting economic development. Despite challenges posed by the incoming administration's stance on climate change, Brecher remains optimistic about grassroots efforts to drive change. He highlighted the growing recognition among Americans of the need to address climate issues and the potential for local and state initiatives to lead the way. Brecher's new book, "The Green New Deal from Below," details over 100 initiatives across more than 40 states, showcasing the power of collective action in building a sustainable future. Listen to the full episode to hear more from Brecher about the Green New Deal and the role of labor in creating a just and sustainable economy. --- America’s Work Force is the only daily labor podcast in the US and has been on the air since 1993, supplying listeners with useful, relevant input into their daily lives through fact-finding features, in-depth interviews, informative news segments and practical consumer reports.
