Intel Project Progress: Dorsey Hager on Central Ohio Construction Boom

Written by awfblog | September 5, 2025

Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the New Albany Intel construction project's three-year anniversary, ongoing construction in Central Ohio and a labor dispute involving Teamsters Local 284 and fire truck manufacturer Sutphen.

Hager spoke about the third anniversary of the New Albany Intel project's groundbreaking, which took place on Sept. 9, 2022, noting significant progress despite delays. Despite more than $10 billion invested in construction and 1,500 workers on site, Intel has shifted its timeline for chip production to 2031. This adjustment has allowed the building trades to better prepare their workforce for the remainder of Phase I. Hager emphasized the project's positive impact on Central Ohio's economy and reputation, citing Columbus's recent recognition as the top U.S. city for business.

The region’s construction boom extends beyond Intel. Hager highlighted a recently approved solar project in Fairfield County, set to power 42,000 homes and employ 800 tradespeople. He stressed the importance of diverse energy sources to support the region's growing tech industry, including datacenters and AI facilities. Despite federal rollbacks on renewable energy incentives, Hager remains optimistic about the project's potential to enhance energy efficiency and create jobs.

The ongoing labor dispute between Teamsters Local 284 and Sutphen, a fire truck manufacturer, illustrates challenges in maintaining long-standing union relationships. Hager detailed how Sutphen’s new management hired union-busting lawyers, leading to regressive bargaining and unfair labor practices. The situation has drawn attention from local government, with the Columbus City Council postponing a contract with Sutphen due to concerns over its labor practices. Hager expressed solidarity with the Teamsters and hoped for a resolution, noting the potential reputational damage to Sutphen.
