Newly appointed Training Coordinator for the Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 53 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, Garrett Giglio, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the operation of the apprenticeship program and what he does for apprentices in the program.

Giglio is in charge of 32 apprentices for Local 53’s JATC program in New Orleans. With growth coming from focused recruitment and organization efforts, he talks about how they’re getting more interest in the apprenticeship program. Giglio is an example of growing into the Insulators directly from high school. He was recruited after graduating high school to apply for the apprenticeship program in 2017, during his time in the program, he was named Apprentice of the Year in his second year. After topping out and joining the Local 53 Executive Board, Giglio was named Training Coordinator at 24.

The program structure is a one-night-a-week class, training apprentices on measurements, proper practices safety procedures. During classroom time, there are several opportunities for hands-on testing for the apprentices. By simulating the working environment for apprentices, the program can ensure they are trained for situations that come up on the job. Also, during the training, they can ensure there are no issues with installing the mechanical insulation and do so in a safe and supportive environment.

Three teachers are part of Local 53’s JATC, and Giglio is the only full-time instructor. He is responsible for securing grants, providing work boots and tools for the apprentices and making sure the apprentices are taken care of. He’s excited for the future of the Insulators because every apprentice he encounters is giving their all and wants to continue to grow within the union.
