Paul Flynn, Business Manager/Financial Secretary of IBEW Local 34, appeared on the AWF Union Podcast and spoke about the construction of a $400 million cancer treatment center.

Local 34 represents over 1,000 members in 17 counties in West Central Illinois. Their jurisdiction covers roughly 9,000 square miles.

Flynn, a union member for 32 years, has a unique background. He explained his career pathway, as he spent a decade as a member of the United Auto Workers before he joined the IBEW, where he has spent the past 20 years.

Members of his Local are busy, Flynn said, as there is plentiful work in the jurisdiction. Currently, members are building the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute, a 180,000-square-foot cancer treatment center on the campus of Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. Other members are working at Caterpillar, various chemical plants and installing solar panels.

He also touched on the Local’s growing apprenticeship program, and explained how they recruit at high schools, junior colleges and Bradley University.
